Thanks to its geometry, the stool can be stacked to save space in a spiralling tower sculpture. Manufactured in 42 production steps at the A-Factory in Turku, Finland, Stool 60 is available in a wide variety of colours and finishes. Alvar Aalto
Recognised today as one of the great masters of modern architecture, Alvar Aalto (1898 –1976) was born in Kuortane, Finland. During a long and prolific career, Aalto designed buildings for almost all key public institutions, as well as standardised housing and private homes. One of the co-founders of Artek, Aalto left a legacy with lasting resonance. Together with his wife Aino Aalto, he began designing furnishings as a natural extension of their architectural thinking and his first modern furniture design was created in 1929 for the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. Artek was set up in 1935 to market and sell Alvar and Aino Aalto’s furniture, lighting and textiles, particularly on international markets.
The Story
Alvar Aalto's iconic Stool 60 is the most elemental of furniture pieces, equally suitable as a seat, a table, storage unit, or display surface. Born of modernist ideals and Finnish innovation, its great legacy and continued relevance owe much to Alvar Aalto's original vision for a universal object made entirely from native birch. Remaining in continuous production since 1933, Stool 60 has barely changed in either material or form, yet it continues to transcend both time and fashion. With this minimum of components Stool 60 is flat-packed, making transport both economical and ecological. Through the timber's individual features and natural beauty, each stool gains its own unique character, developing a rich patina and ageing with grace over the years.
