Knoll. The Original Design

Knoll Saarinen Collection

Eero Saarinen designed some of America's most important public architecture in the 1950s & 60s. His airport terminals, monuments, office buildings and university facilities always reflected the true spirit of the contemporary age, and have became true landmarks.

Thanks to the collaboration with Florence Schust Knoll, Eero also designed furnishings that have gone down in history. With the Pedestal Collection for Knoll he created a lasting symbol of an idea of decor that combines the architectural scale with that of furniture design, in an approach of continuity of form.

Knoll Saarinen Womb Chair

While Eero was studying in the 1930s at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where his father (the renowned Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen) was the Principal, he befriended Florence Schust (Knoll).

Years later, in 1946, Eero started working with Knoll and designed the popular Womb Lounge Chair. The start of a series of timeless, enduring design, continuing the Knoll legacy of producing furniture to the exacting standards of the designer and affirming their unwavering belief in the power and utility of modern design.

The series includes the Womb Lounge Chair, Ottoman and 2 Seater Womb Sofa. The series is available in the "Relax" version that uses new technology and manufacturing techniques to further enhance their comfort.

Knoll Saarinen Executive Chair

Following the success of the Womb chair, Eero then developed the Saarinen Executive Chair and Armchair in 1950. These chairs combined Eero's sculptural forms with Knoll manufacturing expertise to create chairs that are still one of the most comfortable chairs you can sit it. They are perfect as a dining chair, as well as an office chair at a desk or meeting table. You can comfortably sit in them for extended periods of time.

The Pedestal Collection

The Pedestal Collection is truly innovative in and created something that not previously exist and proves the genius of Eero and the team at Knoll. The collection's unique vision is underlined with every single detail, including the selection of marbles for the tops, the recognisable profile of the pedestal base to the colour variation in the fabrics.

It was started back in 1955 and includes chairs, armchairs, dining tables, coffee tables, side tables and stools. It was completed in 1957 and went into production in 1958. The quote below by Eero Saarinen summarises the collection perfectly.

"We have chairs with four legs, with three and even with two, but no one has made one with just on leg, so that's what we'll do"

Knoll Saarinen Tulip Dining Chair

The Tulip chairs were designed alongside the tables and are a triumph of art and technology. Florence Knoll always used to say that Eero was foremost a Sculptor and his sculptural approach to design alongside his overall architectural vision allowed him to create a classic of the future. Pieces of furniture that are as relevant now as they were when they first went into production back in 1958.

The chairs have a cast aluminium base that is coated with an anti-chip Rislan finish in either white or black. The shell is moulded fibreglass reinforced plastic bonded finish. They are available as either fixed or swivel. The upholstery is either just the removable foam cushion (fixed via velcro) or can also have the inner shell upholstered for additional comfort. The chairs are available as either side chairs or armchairs. They are as comfortable as they are beautiful.

Finally, the KnollStudio logo and the signature of Eero Saarinen are placed on the underside of the base to allow to know that you have an original licensed piece.

"The undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs. I wanted to make the chair all one thing again."

Knoll Saarinen Tables

Knoll Saarinen tables, designed by Eero Saarinen, are iconic pieces of mid-century modern furniture celebrated for their elegant, minimalist design and innovative use of materials. The most distinctive feature of Saarinen tables is the single pedestal base, commonly known as the "tulip" base, which provides a sleek and uncluttered look by eliminating the traditional four legs. This design offers more legroom and a cleaner aesthetic.

The materials used in Saarinen tables are also notable. The base is typically made of cast aluminum, providing stability and a smooth, polished finish. The tabletop can be made from various materials, including marble, laminate, and wood, each offering different visual and tactile qualities to suit diverse interior styles.

These tables are available in different shapes and sizes, including round, oval, and square tops, making them versatile for various spaces such as dining rooms, living rooms, and offices. Their timeless design and functionality make Saarinen tables a popular choice for both contemporary and classic interiors. Discover all about these stunning piece by clicking on the link below.
