George Nelson

George Nelson, born in 1908, is considered one of the most important figures in American design. He graduated with an architectural degree from Yale University and then went onto study at the American Academy in Rome from 1932 to 1934. He also received a degree in fine arts in 1931.

Innovative Furniture Design

In 1947, he became the Director of Design for Herman Miller, the chairman of the company selected him for this position despite Nelson having no previous experience in designing furniture as he was interested in his ideas about innovative furniture. His first catalogue was published in 1945 and included some of the most iconic furnishings of the 20th Century. It was a successful time for the company and Nelson kept the position until 1972. During his time there, George opened his own design studio in New York, where he bought together many of the best designers to design for Herman Miller, under his own label.

Designer with Many Talents

He was not only interested in architecture and design, but also was a well respected writer, publicist and keen photographer. Nelson combined these interests and published eleven books and multiple articles on design topics. In addition to his interest in interior furnishings, he also created the first L shaped desk and the revolutionary idea of the ‘storage wall’, whilst designing several private homes, making him a talented and versatile designer.
