Montana - 40 Years of colour
This year Montana furniture have celebrated 40 years of colours. Since 1982 the Danish brand have been producing its flexible furniture system in an expansive palette of colours.
The late Peter J. Lassen created Montana’s system of 36 modules in 4 depths to provide endless possibilities and with 42 colour finishes each storage unit can be as unique as that of the person that chooses it.
Create your own personal look by adding shelves, doors, drawers, legs, castors and plinths to the box system. If you fancy a change in look or use you can easily renew your furniture by adding a shelf, back panel or door. Even just by changing the colour of the handles or legs. There are endless possibilities to create a look that is just right for you and to create pieces of furniture that can be moved from room to room as the needs of the interior or home changes over time.
The functional and flexible system is designed to be a sustainable product that can be kept forever. Quality of the design, construction and materials used ensures that, when used correctly, Montana’s products have a long life circle and come with a ten year guarantee.
In 2019 Montana was among the very first Danish furniture manufacturers to be awarded the EU Eco label. The brand take their environmental responsibilities seriously and work in close consultation with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. The Montana system also carries the Danish Indoor Climate label and the ISO 14001 environmental standard. Since 2007 Montana have exclusively used water-based lacquers which do not smell or contain solvents.
Every eight years Montana develop a new colour palette. 30 colours sit alongside ten grey, white and black shades as well as two veneers making up the 42 variants. Newly introduced colours do replace the old, but Montana offer a ten-year colour replenishment guarantee which means if you have an existing Montana piece and wish to add to it in the same colour you can so within a ten year period. Throughout all of Montana’s 40 years of colour they have worked with paint and coatings manufacturer Akzo Nobel.
Montana’s current colour palette was created in collaboration with award winning Danish designer Margrethe Odgaard whose career in textiles has been driven by the development of colours.
"Just as the modules offer infinite possibilities for combination, the colours also need to be able to be mixed and matched".
For Margrethe the task of developing the colour range wasn’t a matter of looking at trends. Alongside Peter and Joakim Lassen and Montana’s design team Margrethe has created a palette that she believes has an eternal relevance as they will have to last a long time- in both the homes of those who buy Montana and in the Montana range.
To mark their 40 year celebration Montana have gone big! And in partnership with Akzo Nobel the brand have collaborated with artist Camille Walala to transform the Montana factory in Haarby, Funen into a large scale work of art reflecting the brands latest tag line - Lets create playful spaces.
We have enjoyed meeting up with Montana a couple of times this year, at 3DD (3 Days of Design) in Copenhagen during the summer, and also for a more recent visit to Montana’s factory and headquarters. Here we gained more product knowledge, toured the factory where the units are constructed and took part in a training on combining colours. We definately came back feeling more confident and inspired by colourful and playful display spaces we viewed. With so many possibilities of colour, function and style a Montana unit can be specified to be as different for each home as the personality that picks it.
